Title:
Screening of Canadian wheat for biological nitrification inhibition
Agreement Number:
ICP-2021-22-AN-09
Agreement Value:
$265,000.00
Agreement Date:
Apr 1, 2021 - Mar 31, 2022
Description:
The objective of this project is to fund the use of novel techniques, developed by scientists at CIMMYT, to screen 25 varieties of Canadian wheat for the expression of biological nitrification inhibition (BNI). The goal is to identify lines that express BNI so that these can be used in the creation of new varieties of Canadian wheat that can naturally inhibit nitrification; improving nitrogen use efficiency and reducing nitrogen lost to the surrounding environment through the leaching of nitrate and the gaseous losses of NO, N2O and N2.
Organization:
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
Expected Results:
New varieties of wheat that can naturally inhibit nitrification will be developed.
