Description:
Undertake research and engagement activities on momentum in Atlantic Canada
Organization:
Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Expected Results:

Over the past several years, the Public Policy Forum (PPF) has collaborated with partners in Atlantic Canada to build the brand of Atlantic Momentum through research and engagement activities. The PPF developed the Atlantic Momentum Index, a comprehensive measure to track economic and social progress in Atlantic Canada. This index evaluates various indicators to determine the region's momentum in areas such as population growth, innovation, employment, and social cohesion. It aims to provide policymakers and residents with insights into the region's strengths and challenges, helping to shape policies that support long-term, inclusive growth. Recent reports indicate that while the region continues to show positive momentum, there are areas where growth has slowed, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to sustain progress.

Under the project, the PPF will continue to explore opportunities to drive growth and inclusive prosperity in the Atlantic region. Their focus remains on providing information and research to spark discussions about pivotal policy choices that support and continue the momentum in Atlantic Canada.

PPF seeks to achieve three main objectives under the project:

  1. Monitoring economic and policy changes: Gathering information and conducting research on emerging topics in the Atlantic economy. Collaborating with regional stakeholders and policymakers to foster partnerships that address challenges, opportunities, and solutions for continuing momentum and inclusive economic growth.
  2. Convening leaders from all four Atlantic provinces: Addressing national and regional issues and opportunities by sharing information with leaders, collaborating with key stakeholders in events led by the PPF or by others, and problem-solving, with a focus on productivity challenges and economic growth.
  3. Increasing the voice of Atlantic Canada within the national policy landscape: Promoting the sharing of success and opportunities in the region.

The PPF will achieve these objectives by focusing on regional strengths and opportunities identified by the Atlantic Canada Momentum Index report and through engagements with policy leaders, decision-makers, business and community leaders. They will also spotlight research briefs and reports on issues, solutions, and trends in the public policy environment impacting growth and prosperity.

Overall, the project will achieve the following outcomes:

  • Conduct analysis on targeted policy topics: The PPF will perform in-depth analysis on specific policy areas, such as interprovincial trade barriers, energy transition, and labor market impacts, that are crucial for the region.
  • Engage key stakeholders in each Atlantic Province on critical issues: The PPF will actively involve key stakeholders from each Atlantic Province in discussions on important issues, and seize opportunities to partner with, or bring a voice to, other events aiming to spur regional economic growth. This engagement will include roundtable discussions to gather diverse perspectives and foster collaboration, as well as engaging in events led by others.
  • Identify policy solutions and outline the way forward in key areas: Based on the analysis and stakeholder engagement, the PPF will identify viable policy solutions for the key areas of focus.
  • Disseminate analysis and policy solutions to key audiences: The PPF will ensure that the findings and recommendations reach the relevant audiences. This will involve creating reports and presentations, as well as communicating these findings with policymakers, industry leaders, and other regional stakeholders.
