Title:
Grant Agreement for the Innovative Solutions Canada Program, Project -Chick-Flu-A
Agreement Number:
-
Agreement Value:
$550,000.00
Agreement Date:
Mar 10, 2025 - May 10, 2026
Description:
Avian Influenza (AI) is a contagious viral infection that can cause severe illness and mortality in gallinaceous poultry (chicken, turkey, quails). It also has the potential to cross over to mammals, including companion animals such as cats and dogs. AI is currently diagnosed in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) laboratories by molecular methods. This process is time consuming, labour intensive and requires expensive laboratory equipment. 11281232 Canada Inc. (LFAnt Medical) aims to develop an easy-to-use, rapid, and affordable lateral flow test for the detection of AI in the field. The proposed method involves the use of gold nanoparticles in combination with a lateral flow assay reader to detect AI and at the same time, H5 and H7 subtypes, with the same sensitivity and specificity as current molecular diagnostic tests used in the CFIA laboratory.
Organization:
Canadian Food Inspection Agency
Expected Results:

This Phase 2 Innovative Solutions Canada grant is for the development of a prototype for an easy-to-use and portable lateral flow test to detect AI in the field. This innovation could help take appropriate measures to limit the spread of AI, contain outbreaks, and protect commercial food producers and poultry farms by rapidly detecting AI in the field. Any device developed as part of this challenge will not replace or eliminate CFIA laboratory testing for AI (i.e., confirmation of positive result by sending sample to a CFIA laboratory, or confirmation of results if flock is symptomatic).
