Description:
The Research component of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) Class Grant and Contribution Program to support Research, Awareness and Learning in Space Science and Technology provides financial support to organizations to conduct space related research and development in priority areas. It will support targeted knowledge development and innovation to sustain and enhance the Canadian capacity to use space to address national needs and priorities in the future. More specifically, this project entitled ""Canadian Arctic ACE Validation Campaign: Extended Phase Validation of SCISAT and OSIRIS for 2013"" will provide an Arctic springtime dataset for the ongoing validation of two Canadian satellite missions: the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) on the SCISAT satellite and the Optical Spectrograph and InfraRed Imager System (OSIRIS) instrument on the Odin satellite. The project has the following objectives: The primary scientific objective of this campaign project is to provide total column measurements and, where possible, vertical profiles or partial columns of trace gases, atmospheric and aerosol extinction, temperature and pressure for validating the ACE and OSIRIS satellite data under the perturbed conditions present in the springtime Arctic stratosphere. The secondary scientific objective is to use the campaign data set for scientific studies. As we are able to continue the series of ACE campaigns, this extends our multi-year Arctic data set to ten years. The data record is now getting long enough to examine the inter-annual variability of trace gases over Eureka. The training objective of this campaign is to provide Arctic field experience for graduate students and other highly qualified personnel in the area of atmospheric observations and scientific experience in the area of validation analyses and data interpretation.
