Title:
Mid-Infrared Molecular Absorption in the Atmospheres of K Giants
Agreement Value:
$10,000.00
Agreement Date:
Mar 11, 2022 - Mar 31, 2024
Description:
Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 1 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on June 14, 2021, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data.
We will observe four K giants with the Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) on JWST. Our MRS observations will resolve the line structure in the mid-infrared absorption bands with better spectral resolution and sensitivity than ever before possible. The resulting spectra will reveal the temperature and other physical properties of the absorbing molecular layer as a function of wavelength. With these measurements, we can build a better generation of more accurate models of late-type stellar atmospheres and improve the calibration of infrared space observations.
Organization:
Canadian Space Agency
Expected Results:
The Research component of the program provides financial support to organizations to conduct space related research and development in priority areas. It will support targeted knowledge development and innovation to sustain and enhance the Canadian capacity to use space to address national needs and priorities in the future.
