Title:
Zephyr Electric Propulsion for Small Satellites
Agreement Number:
26STDPAA29
Agreement Value:
$1,000,000.00
Agreement Date:
Aug 28, 2026 - Dec 31, 2028
Description:
Canadian satellites need propulsion systems to maintain their orbits, avoid collisions, and safely deorbit at end of life, in line with requirements that are becoming mandatory under new international regulations. Today, Canada has no domestic manufacturer of electric propulsion thrusters, forcing Canadian satellite operators to depend on foreign suppliers subject to export restrictions and supply chain delays. NordSpace Corp will develop the Zephyr-200, a Canadian-made Hall-effect electric thruster for small satellites weighing 50–200 kg. The project will advance this technology from laboratory prototype to a fully tested engineering model, demonstrating performance on both xenon and lower-cost krypton propellants. Key innovations include a long-life design, dual-propellant capability, and Canadian additive manufacturing techniques. This project strengthens Canada's space sovereignty by creating a homegrown propulsion capability, supports Canadian satellite companies building Earth observation and communications constellations, and creates highly skilled aerospace jobs in Canada.
Organization:
Canadian Space Agency
Expected Results:

The Research component of the program provides financial support to organizations to conduct space related research and development in priority areas. It will support targeted knowledge development and innovation to sustain and enhance the Canadian capacity to use space to address national needs and priorities in the future.
