Agreement Value:

Agreement Date:
Jul 17, 2018 - Jun 30, 2019
Description:
March 2018 - In Afghanistan, the United Nations estimates that 3.3 million people are in acute need of life-saving humanitarian assistance due to conflict, natural disasters and cross-border returns from Iran and Pakistan. On average, 1,100 people each day – two thirds of them women and children – were forcibly displaced by violence in 2017. Malnutrition and food insecurity levels are high and health partners report a 21% increase in trauma cases since 2016. Increasing conflict and casualty numbers are compounding protection needs and access constraints across the country. With GAC’s support, Oxfam Canada is addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of up to 30,179 conflict-affected people, including internally displaced populations (IDPs), returnees and host communities in the Kunduz province of Afghanistan. Project activities include: (1) constructing and rehabilitating water supply systems and gender-appropriate sanitation facilities; (2) providing cash transfers to increase access to essential food and non-food needs; and (3) providing protection services including the prevention, identification and response to sexual and gender-based violence.
Organization:
Global Affairs Canada
Expected Results:

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased use of adequate safe drinking water, gender-appropriate sanitation facilities and improved hygiene practices, particularly for women and girls; (2) increased access to essential food, services and non-food needs for vulnerable female and male internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees; and (3) improved use of protection, prevention and response services (including sexual and gender-based violence) by female and male IDPs, returnees and host communities.

The expected ultimate outcome is reduced suffering, increased and maintained human dignity and lives saved for internally displaced people, returnees and host communities in targeted districts of Kunduz Afghanistan.
