Agreement Date:
Dec 28, 2018 - Jun 30, 2019
Description:
November 2018 - In Afghanistan, the United Nations (UN) estimates that 4.2 million people are in need of life-saving humanitarian assistance, up from 3.3 million earlier in the year. Over the course of 2018, Afghanistan has been facing a critical drought, resulting in the severe deterioration of the humanitarian situation. According to the UN, up to 2.5 million persons are facing urgent food security needs. The drought and continued insecurity have also resulted in the displacement of over 250,000 persons since the start of the year. As a result, the UN has revised its 2018 Humanitarian Response Plan to reflect the new needs of drought affected persons. With GAC’s support, the World Food Programme (WFP) is providing drought-affected populations with lifesaving food assistance, targeting 2.5 million food insecure persons in Afghanistan. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; and (3) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food.

Global Affairs Canada

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to food assistance for drought-affected populations; (2) increased access to supplementary feeding for vulnerable groups, including children and pregnant and lactating women; (3) increased resilience of severely food-insecure communities against further shocks.

The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises.
