Description:
This project seeks to contribute to the implementation of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali by making the tools for its implementation—Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR), a joint protection force and local police—more participatory, inclusive, and gender and conflict sensitive. The proposed activities aim to meet the needs of local populations in northern regions, Mopti, Kayes and the District of Bamako. This is expected to be accomplished by establishing mechanisms for dialogue and having stakeholders use them to build trust and to support the implementation of joint actions that bring parties together, strengthen social cohesion and prevent violent conflicts.

Global Affairs Canada
Expected Results:
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) reduced tensions, especially those affecting women, and prevention of conflicts in the regions of Gao, Timbuktu and Mopti; (2) stronger relationships that improve social cohesion in northern Mali; and (3) enhanced mechanisms and capacity for inclusive and participatory management of security.

Peace and Stabilization Operations
Program Purpose:
The Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPs) is an integral component of the Government of Canada’s toolbox to prevent and respond to conflicts and crises abroad. It supports rapid, effective, whole-of-government coordinated responses to a wide range of challenges and serves as a valuable instrument for supporting stability in conflict-affected regions. PSOPs provides visible and concrete assistance in response to conflicts and crises abroad through targeted programming, the deployment of Canadian police officers (in partnership with Public Safety Canada and the RCMP) and civilian personnel, and direct support to the UN and multilateral peace operations, conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding efforts.
