Description:
The project will address the third pillar of the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) – peaceful uses of nuclear energy – by convening two workshops, one for states in Africa and one for states in Southeast Asia, to engage political and technical officials, regional and international organizations, industry and academia to promote the NPT and, in particular, peaceful uses of nuclear energy in the region.

Expected Results:

• Increase awareness among African policymakers and technical experts of the positive role that could be played by peaceful applications of nuclear energy in Africa, particularly through support provided by the IAEA and other international partners.
• Increase awareness of African decision makers of the linkages between peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the NPT.
• Promote partnerships between African experts, academia and industry and their international counterparts.
• Highlight the role of regional organisations and identify ways to strengthen their support of the peaceful applications of nuclear energy in Africa.
• Identify areas to enhance IAEA support.
• Identify how the upcoming NPT Review Conference might serve to help countries develop and expand their peaceful nuclear activities.
• Identify nuclear safety and nuclear security needs for peaceful nuclear applications under the NPT.
