Description:
P007233001: The Défi éducation des filles au Mali (DÉFI) [Girls' Education Challenge in Mali], funded by Global Affairs Canada through a maximum contribution of $12,070,449 over 5 years, will be implemented in Mali by Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd. and its principal Canadian partners Farm Radio International and Education International. The initiative will contribute to an overall improvement in demand, access and retention, mainly for girls, but also for boys, in formal and non-formal education programs in conflict-affected communities in Ségou, Mopti, Gao and Timbuktu. This will be achieved by: reducing harmful social norms and other gender-related barriers affecting girls' education in terms of demand, access and retention, through a communication approach based on interactive radio; improving formal and non-formal gender-sensitive education services for girls and boys; and improving public sector performance in the provision of equitable, gender-sensitive and evidence-based education services, and ensuring the consolidation and integration of the results from the other two components. Strategies will be adopted to reduce barriers to girls' education, including interactive radio programmes, listening groups in which participants can safely express themselves, digital innovations, etc. The project will support the vocational training of girls who can no longer access primary education and will provide remedial classes for girls with learning difficulties.
P007233002: The COVID-19 pandemic that started in 2020 has created a sanitary crisis in Mali that significantly affected the education sector with school closures and a forced shift, often difficult, to distance education. Preventions and counteracting measures seriously impacted the education system in Mali.
Since mid-2020, Mali has developed a national strategy to fight back to which technical and financial partners, such as Alinea, are aligning their activities. The National Education Ministry of Mali has developed an action plan for the regions of Segou, Mopti, Gao and Timbuktu, particularly in the less well served regions.
The activities to fight against the impact of COVID-19 developed by Alinea will aim at supporting this action plan in order to assist in prevention, continuity of teaching and the reopening of schools.
