Agreement Value:
$743,446.00
Agreement Date:
Mar 14, 2022 - Jun 30, 2027
Description:
The project will enhance the ability of 150 girls and young women in the Mathare Valley Slum to achieve their goals in higher education, the workforce, and their community by providing access to high school education and supports that increase their chances of completing this education. Canada Mathare Education Trust (CMET) will work with their families and the larger community to shift the attitudes and behaviours that create additional barriers for women and girls. Formal educational opportunities at the secondary and post-secondary level will be provided to female scholars, while informal educational activities and community development initiatives will engage the wider community to confront gender-based entrenched attitudes, roles and responsibilities and remove barriers to the access and achievement of girls and young women in the educational, workforce and community arenas. Project activities will be implemented by CMET`s local office in Mathare, with support from CMETrust’s Board of Directors in Canada. Key intermediaries include the CMETrust Alumni Association, the CMETrust Parent and Guardian Association, partner schools, and other community organizations.
Organization:
Global Affairs Canada
Expected Results:

The project expects to achieve the following intermediate outcomes: i. improved educational achievement, life skills and confidence among young women in Mathare; and ii. increased ability of girls to overcome day-to-day gender-specific challenges.

• Secondary and post-secondary school scholarships provided to young women from Mathare.
• Sensitization sessions on menstrual hygiene provided to CMETrust female scholars and training in sexual and reproductive health provided to all CMETrust scholars.
