Description:
The project aims to improve the quality of education and reduce gender and racial disparities for Indigenous and Afro-descendent primary and secondary school students in the Caribbean Coast Region of Honduras. The Project will develop Intercultural Bilingual Education and will deploy technology-based learning labs consisting of laptops and a Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning (RACHEL) digital library and offers community workshops in 10 central nucleus schools. Project activities includes: 1) increased access to high-quality education materials in digital libraries; 2) teacher training and professionalization programs offered through distance education modalities; and 3) creation of linguistically and culturally relevant, and gender-sensitive educational resources. The project targets to directly reach 400 primary and secondary level teachers and 8000 students, and indirectly 25,000 inhabitants of remote Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in Honduras.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes for this project include: 1) Increased use of technology-based and STEAM educational resources by teachers, majority women, Indigenous and Afro-descendant primary and secondary schools of the Atlantic Coast of Honduras; 2) Increased practice of Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) in the classroom by teachers, majority women, in Indigenous and Afro-descendant primary and secondary schools of the Atlantic Coast of Honduras; 3) Improved contextualized instruction from a gender-equitable and rights-based approach by teachers, majority women in Indigenous and Afro-descendant primary and secondary schools of the Atlantic Coast of Honduras.

enhanced pedagogy skills of teachers in the use of technology-based educational resources; 2) increased ability of teachers to promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) learning for students, particularly girls; 3) increased access for female indigenous teachers to indigenous territory based, inter-cultural, bilingual, gender-sensitive and Ministry of Education-approved distance professional credential program; 4) improved skills of teachers to teach inter-cultural and bilingual gender equality and SRHR; and 5) increased ability of teachers to utilize indigenous-rights, gender-sensitive, and mother-tongue educational content.
