Description:
This project aims to bolster women’s resilience and adaptive capacity in the face of climate challenges, ensuring they are stronger and empowered. It focuses on enhancing climate change adaptation of 2,000 rural families (1050 headed by women) in Amhara and Oromia regions, significantly impacted by climate change and of 4,000 women entrepreneurs in Addis Ababa, a critical hub for agri-food processing. It places emphasis on implementing climate resilient practices and technologies in key agribusiness value chains, including teff and legumes, by engaging key stakeholders including cooperatives. Technical training, improved technologies, and market development initiatives focus on uplifting teff and legume production of small-holder women farmers and the efficiency and profitability of women entrepreneurs involved in the agri-business value chain. STRONG’HER aims to reduce climate vulnerability in injera and legumes storage and processing activities and address the gap in climate resilient technical knowledge of women entrepreneurs engaged in injera baking and legumes processing. The project also addresses gendered norms, stereotypes and power relations that perpetuate and legitimize inequality.
Organization:
Global Affairs Canada
Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) reduced vulnerability of small-holder women farmers and their families to climate change impacts, particularly to drought and precipitation variability, through the adoption of climate-resilient practices and technologies, in teff and legumes value chains; (2) reduced climate vulnerability of women involved in teff or legume value chains, particularly at the storage and processing nodes, to climate change exacerbated drought and precipitation variability; and (3) increased public and private stakeholders’ effectiveness in supporting gender-responsive Climate Change adaptation for women entrepreneurs, small-holder women farmers and their families.
