Description:

This project examines the exclusion of women with family care responsibilities from meaningful opportunities in military and police organizations such as the United Nations peace operations. The results of this research project aim to produce practical guidance, including recommendations for policy change, on how to improve peacekeeping opportunities for women with care responsibilities. Project activities include: (1) conducting research with the UN and troop and police contributing countries to UN peace operations on the barriers that limit peacekeeping opportunities for women with care responsibilities; (2) facilitating awareness-raising workshops to better understand key issues related to women peacekeepers with family care responsibilities; and (3) publishing a report on best practices that will be shared across the UN and countries that contribute peacekeeping troops to better support women with caring responsibilities.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased meaningful participation of uniformed women in UN peace operations and troop and police contributing countries security institutions; (2) enhanced gender-responsive human resource policies and practices within UN peace operations and troop and police contributing countries security institutions; and (3) enhanced capacity of UN peace operations and troop and police contributing countries security institutions to be attentive to care responsibilities and care needs.

Program:

Peace and Stabilization Operations

Program Purpose:

The Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPs) is an integral component of the Government of Canada’s toolbox to prevent and respond to conflicts and crises abroad. It supports rapid, effective, whole-of-government coordinated responses to a wide range of challenges and serves as a valuable instrument for supporting stability in conflict-affected regions. PSOPs provides visible and concrete assistance in response to conflicts and crises abroad through targeted programming, the deployment of Canadian police officers (in partnership with Public Safety Canada and the RCMP) and civilian personnel, and direct support to the UN and multilateral peace operations, conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding efforts.
