Description:
The Justice Support Basket Fund is a 5-year multi-donor pooled fund led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to which Canada contributes. The project contributes to the fight against impunity in Haiti by strengthening the capacities of institutions and players in the judicial system, and by ensuring better coordination with the Haitian National Police (PNH) for investigations, prosecutions and judgments. As a starting point, the project proposes to strengthen the independence and integrity of judges and government commissioners. It also provides for the establishment of an international mentoring system for anti-gang, financial and gender-based violence units. This will help to speed up priority cases, as well as building the capacity of the judicial system at community level to improve access to justice.

Expected Results:
The expected results of this project include: 1) strengthening the independence and integrity of magistrates by ensuring their accountability and performance in the fight against insecurity, corruption and gender-based violence; 2) capacity-building for magistrates and coordination with the PNH in the conduct of investigations, prosecutions and the fight against crimes linked to insecurity and corruption, which should lead to a reduction in impunity; 3) adaptation and implementation of the legal and regulatory framework to combat insecurity and corruption; 4) capacity-building of the judicial system at community level, as well as access to justice in order to prevent and resolve conflicts, which should contribute to increasing the resilience of the environment; 5) consolidation of the advocacy and monitoring capacities of civil society organizations (CSOs), ensuring the accountability of actors in the judicial system and the advancement of justice reforms.
