Description:

This project proposes a $55 million investment to secure and reinforce the building blocks of Mozambique’s health system to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable communities in the country. Implemented in 10 out of Mozambique’s 11 provinces, this project will reach nearly 5 million people in historically underserved districts with critical services. By investing in the essential foundations of the healthcare system -- such as rehabilitating district hospitals with resilient infrastructure and access to clean water, ensuring sustainable access to quality family planning services, and expanding community health programs - this project will build stability in health care delivery. Additionally, it aims to reestablish functional surgical units, enhance access to sexual and reproductive health services, and deliver essential nutrition interventions to 1.5 million children. These investments will help to prevent early pregnancies, reduce maternal and newborn deaths, prevent stunting, and improve the basic health and wellbeing of Mozambicans while leveraging additional investments in the health system.

Expected Results:

The proposed project aims to reach a projected total population of 4.6 million people in 63 districts across 10 provinces of Mozambique (representing 75% of the target population in these districts). This includes 2.3 million women (aged 15-49) and 600,000 adolescent girls. In addition, about 81,860 internally displaced persons will benefit in conflict-affected areas.
