Description:
This project supports the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) capacity build uniformed men and women medical and paramedical personnel for peace operations. UNITAR delivers basic field trauma training, including mental health components, and advanced medical training or a training of trainers. The United Nations (UN) selects troop- and police-contributing countries based on their ranking, participation in previous trainings, and come from Africa and Asia. Project activities include: (1) conducting needs assessments; (2) undertaking a preparatory workshop for trainers; (3) delivering up to 4 3-week basic field medical training, including mental health components; (4) delivering up to 4 2-week advanced medical or mental health training; and (5) delivering up to 4 2-week trainings of trainers course on basic field medical training.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved alignment of basic and advanced training for uniformed medical and paramedical personnel with UN standards, policies and guidelines; (2) strengthened uniformed medical and paramedical personnel deployed to peace operations’ foundational knowledge and skills through basic training to address physical and psychological trauma in a gender-responsive manner; (3) enhanced specialized capabilities of uniformed medical and para-medical personnel deployed to UN peace operations through advanced training, enabling them to address complex physical and psychological trauma in high-risk environments in a gender-responsive manner; (4) enhanced capabilities of selected troop- and police-contributing countries (T/PCCs) to deliver gender-responsive basic and advanced training for uniformed medical and para-medical personnel; and (5) increased sustainability of training by developing localized expertise and ownership in T/PCCs.
