This project supports Middlebury College by funding the Vienna Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation to conduct a workshop for experts and beneficiaries. It aims to formulate evidence-based recommendations for regulators to update practices, policies, and regulatory frameworks. It seeks to mitigate exploitable vulnerabilities in emerging technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) which can connect to the Internet of Things (IoT) in nuclear facilities, posing emerging threats to global nuclear security.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved ability of beneficiaries and stakeholders to identify and address nuclear security threats from non-State malicious actors. These threats exploit vulnerabilities within networked emerging technologies, specifically the IoT and AI in nuclear facilities; and (2) strengthened policy commitments by beneficiaries, such as national regulators and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It does so to implement recommendations to update practices and regulations to guide a framework for the secure use and management of emerging technologies of the IoT and AI in nuclear facilities.
