Description:
October 2025 - Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a catastrophic Category 5 storm in southwestern Jamaica on October 28, 2025, and as a powerful Category 3 storm in eastern Cuba the following day. The hurricane caused widespread flooding, damage and destruction to infrastructure, as well as displacement in Jamaica and Cuba. With Global Affairs Canada’s support, World Food Program responds to the humanitarian needs caused by Hurricane Melissa by providing food, financial, logistical, and emergency communications assistance. Project activities include: (1) providing immediate food and nutrition assistance; (2) supporting supply chain and logistics operations; and (3) strengthening emergency telecommunications.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved access to food and nutritional assistance for affected communities; and (2) improved supply chain and logistics services to support the humanitarian response in Jamaica and Cuba.

The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated, and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
