Program Purpose:

Consistent with DFATD strategic programme activities, participation and contribution to the POPs Convention provides an additional instrument for Canada to promote its environmental, health, and sustainable development interests through bilateral, plurilateral, and global activities.
Canadian participation and contribution to achieving the objectives laid out by the POPs Convention is also of relevance to the Government’s overall agenda as outlined in the April 2006 Speech from the Throne, whereby the Government committed to take measures to achieve tangible improvements in our environment, including reductions in pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Canada’s contribution to the POPs Convention is also of importance to protecting the health of Canadians. The Stockholm Convention addresses potential risks posed by chemicals substances, and benefits Canada through international actions to manage those risks. As such, the Convention complements and supports the Government priorities identified through the Clean Air Act and Safe Management of Chemicals program.
