Grants and Contributions:
Canada’s annual assessed contribution is a legally binding obligation of membership and a non-discretionary expenditure.
Payment of the assessed contribution to the OPCW furthers DFATD’s work as specified in the DFATD’s Program Activity Architecture (PAA). Two program activities contained in DFATD’s PAA under the strategic outcome titled “Canada’s interests are advanced internationally” are:
(a) International Security – integrating, advocating, and advancing Canada’s international security interests, bilaterally and multilaterally, as well as managing and implementing DFATD’s policy and programming responsibilities with respect to security and intelligence and
(b) Global Issues – advocating a stronger and more effective multilateral system, capable of addressing Canada’s interests in global issues, in particular international economic relations and development, environment and sustainable development, human rights and human security.
The objective of paying the annual assessed contribution is to enable Canada to meet its financial obligations to the OPCW as well as fulfilling our foreign policy objectives by participating in the work of the organization to eliminate chemical weapons.
