This project will address critical minerals crimes in the Asia-Pacific region through strengthened governance, targeted capacity building, and regional coordination. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime will engage national authorities of Mongolia, the Philippines, and Indonesia to prevent, detect, and respond to minerals-related organized crime, including illicit financial flows and corruption. Project activities include: 1) assessments on minerals-sector crime risks and criminal justice solutions; 2) law enforcement capacity building; and 3) convening regional coordination to reduce critical minerals crimes that threaten shared Canadian and Asia-Pacific interests.

Expected results include: improved understanding and awareness of the vulnerabilities and cross-border dynamics of minerals crime; strengthening implementation of legislations, regulations, and oversight measures in the minerals sector for regulatory bodies and mining authorities; enhanced capacity of law enforcement and criminal justice systems in target countries to prevent and address crime and corruption in the minerals sector; and enhanced access of national authorities to cross-border information, expertise, and operational networks on minerals crime.
