Description:
Through the Indigenous Peoples’ Secretariat of the Arctic Council, this project seeks to increase meaningful participation of the Permanent Participants of the Arctic Council in relevant Arctic events and organize Indigenous youth initiatives and activities. Activities include support for Permanent Participants to participate in international Arctic conferences, meetings and working groups; leading youth engagement initiatives and activities of the Permanent Participants youth network.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) Enhanced cooperation between Indigenous organizations, Arctic States, and other partners in the work of the Arctic Council, especially in the working groups; (2) increased capacity of the Permanent Participants to take active roles in Arctic Council activities and work realized through supporting Indigenous youth, young professionals and knowledge-holders; and (3) augmented knowledge and skills of young Indigenous representatives in Arctic policy, diplomacy and leadership; (4) strengthened Indigenous Peoples Secretariat organizational capacity and youth engagement through a Youth Coordinator.

Global Arctic Leadership Initiative
Program Purpose:

The purpose of the Global Arctic Leadership Initiative is to strengthen Canada’s global leadership in the Arctic. These funds are merged with the pre-existing Canadian International Arctic Fund program, in order to inspire a larger and more robust program that supports the achievement of three key objectives of the International Chapter of Canada’s Arctic and Northern Policy Framework (2019): ▪ Bolster Canadian leadership in multilateral forums where polar issues are discussed and decided upon; ▪ Enhance representation and participation of Arctic and northern Canadians in relevant international forums and negotiations; and ▪ Ensure the Canadian Arctic and North and its people are safe, secure and well-defended (operational funding).
