January 2019 - The humanitarian situation in Myanmar is characterized by a complex combination of vulnerability to natural disasters, armed conflict, inter-communal tension, statelessness and displacement. It is estimated that 941,000 crisis-affected women, men, girls and boys will be in need of humanitarian assistance this year.
With GAC’s support, Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is responding to the critical and urgent needs of internally displaced people (IDPs) in Sittwe and Pauktaw Townships in Central Rakhine, Myanmar. Project activities include: (1) providing hygiene and dignity kits to women; (2) providing basic non-food items to persons with special needs; (3) conducting information sessions on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and on the rights of women and girls, with women’s groups; (4) conducting classes on the Myanmar language and basic numeracy literacy for women; (5) repairing and upgrading existing shelters; (6) providing assistive devices, including mobility aids as needed; and (7) installing solar lamps in IDP camps.

Expected Results:
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to water, sanitation, SRHR and protection services and information for Rohingya IDPs, particularly women and girls; (2) increased access to safe, dignified and gender-responsive housing; (3) improved living conditions and enhanced emergency preparedness of camp residents, particularly women and girls, in Sittwe and Pauktaw IDP camps; and (4) increased leadership capacity among Rohingya women and girls and inclusive representation in local institutions within IDP camps.
The expected ultimate outcome is reduced suffering and increased human dignity for Rohingya IDPs, particularly women and girls, in Rakhine State, Myanmar.
