This project is part of Canada’s Women’s Voice and Leadership Program, which supports local and regional women’s organisations and networks that are working to promote women’s rights and advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. This is done by supporting activities, building institutional capacity, and promoting network and alliance-building as women’s rights and feminist organizations are critical agents of change. The Program also responds to the globally recognized, significant gap in funding and support to women’s rights organizations and movements around the world.
This project supports Guatemalan Indigenous women’s rights organisations that seek to empower women and girls, advance the protection of women’s rights and achieve gender equality. This project is co-implemented by Oxfam Canada and the Tz’ununija’ Indigenous Women’s Movement, a national organization in Guatemala. Expected Results:
Results achieved as of March 2023 (fiscal year 2022/23) are as follows: (1) 21 women’s rights organizations are now using best practices in governance and management; (2) 16 members of Indigenous women’s organizations are participating in decision-making spaces at the community, municipal, departmental or national level; (3) 26 women’s organizations and networks are advancing women’s rights and gender equality; (4) 7 women’s rights organizations are receiving direct support for programming and institutional strengthening; (5) the Tz’ununija’ organization has received Can$908,746.11 to support its basic administrative functions and program support to the 20 participating Indigenous human rights organizations; and (6) 134 Indigenous women have benefited from psychological and legal assistance.
