Description:

This project works to undertake research to map formal and informal security structures in Yemen, in the governorates of al-Hudayda, Ta’iz and one Southern governorate (either Aden or al-Dhali’). The research aims to formulate recommendations on transitional security governance in support of the efforts of the Office of the UN Special Envoy to the Secretary General on Yemen (OSESGY). Project activities include: (1) conducting key informant interviews; (2) undertaking observation; and (3) developing briefing papers focused on formal and informal security institutions at the local level.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) enhanced knowledge on the institutional structures, capacities and political affiliations of security providers on the local level; and (2) improved ability of the OSESGY to negotiate transitional security governance arrangements that take in consideration the needs of diverse Yemeni women, girls, men, and boys.

Program:

Peace and Stabilization Operations

Program Purpose:

The Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPs) is an integral component of the Government of Canada’s toolbox to prevent and respond to conflicts and crises abroad. It supports rapid, effective, whole-of-government coordinated responses to a wide range of challenges and serves as a valuable instrument for supporting stability in conflict-affected regions. PSOPs provides visible and concrete assistance in response to conflicts and crises abroad through targeted programming, the deployment of Canadian police officers (in partnership with Public Safety Canada and the RCMP) and civilian personnel, and direct support to the UN and multilateral peace operations, conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding efforts.
