Agreement Value:
$1,250,000.00
Agreement Date:
May 5, 2021 - Mar 31, 2022
Description:
February 2021 – Uganda currently hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa, and the fourth largest in the world, more than 1.4 million people, primarily from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most of these live in settlements in Uganda’s remote northern and western regions, relying on humanitarian assistance to meet their essential needs. Protection is a particular concern, as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated inequities related to gender, age, and other factors already felt within the displaced population.
With GAC’s support, CARE is working to reduce vulnerability to and address the impacts of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) amongst women and girls in South Sudanese and Congolese refugee and host communities in Uganda. Project activities include: (1) working with local stakeholders to improve reporting and response mechanisms for SGBV and other protection concerns; (2) providing training and support to local health facilities; and (3) providing case-management and other support for survivors of SGBV.
Organization:
Global Affairs Canada
Expected Results:
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) reduced vulnerability and improved community response to SGBV; (2) improved capacity of health facilities to respond to SGBV; and, (3) improved lives and livelihoods for survivors of SGBV.
The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated, and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
