Peacebuilding in Sri Lanka through mine clearance and reintegration of a vulnerable workforce
Agreement Number:
7430469 P010072001
Agreement Value:
$1,350,000.00
Agreement Date:
May 21, 2021 - Aug 31, 2023
Description:
The peace that followed a long and deadly civil war in Sri Lanka is fragile, and conflict over ethno-religious divides is rising. Explosive remnants of war remain in the northeast region of Sri Lanka and impact vulnerable and marginalized groups. This project uses an integrated mine action response to release land to communities. It uses vocational training to increase the capacity of de-miners at the end of the project. Both activities aim to decrease social tensions and divides by transitioning and integrating the most marginalized into the workforce.
Organization:
Global Affairs Canada
Expected Results:

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) safer access to land and sustainable livelihood opportunities for Sri Lankans in the Northern Province and Eastern Province, to enable a peaceful society; (2) enhanced gender-responsive readiness of the demining workforce to transition from demining to self-employment or wage employment opportunities.

Peace and Stabilization Operations
Program Purpose:

The Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPs) is an integral component of the Government of Canada’s toolbox to prevent and respond to conflicts and crises abroad. It supports rapid, effective, whole-of-government coordinated responses to a wide range of challenges and serves as a valuable instrument for supporting stability in conflict-affected regions. PSOPs provides visible and concrete assistance in response to conflicts and crises abroad through targeted programming, the deployment of Canadian police officers (in partnership with Public Safety Canada and the RCMP) and civilian personnel, and direct support to the UN and multilateral peace operations, conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding efforts.
