Description:
This grant represents Canada’s long-term institutional support to UN Women - the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. UN Women uses these funds, along with other donors’ funding, to achieve its mandate. UN Women’s triple mandate, along with its global network and deep policy and programming expertise, continues to endow the Entity with a unique capacity to: (i) support Member States to strengthen global norms and standards for gender equality and women’s empowerment, and mainstream gender perspectives in other thematic areas; (ii) promote coordination and coherence across the UN system to enhance accountability and results for gender equality and women’s empowerment; and (iii) undertake operational activities to support Member States, upon their request, in translating global norms and standards into legislation, policies and strategies at the regional and country levels. This allows UN-Women to link global, national and local actors to create an enabling environment for the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide.

Expected Results:

The expected results for this project as stated by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in its 2022-2025 Strategic Plan include: 1) a comprehensive and dynamic set of global norms and standards on gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls is strengthened and translated into gender-responsive laws, policies, and institutions; 2) Public and private financing advance gender equality through gender-responsive financing policies, strategies and instruments; 3) More men and boys, and women and girls, adopt attitudes, norms and practices that advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, including those that promote positive social norms; 4) More women and girls have equitable access to high-quality public goods, services, and resources that are responsive to their needs; 5) More women and girls exercise their voice, agency and leadership, including through an enabling environment that supports women’s- and youth organizations; 6) Desired systemic outcome: Gender statistics, sex-disaggregated data, and knowledge are produced, analysed and used to inform policymaking, advocacy and accountability for delivering gender equality and women’s empowerment results; and, 7) The UN System coherently and systematically contributes to progress on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
