Description:
This project supports the United Nations (UN) Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005, the CERF is a global pooled fund that disburses funding directly to UN Agencies to deliver life-saving assistance. It is a rapid and flexible mechanism that frequently serves as the first source of funding in new and rapidly escalating emergencies. The CERF is managed by the United Nation’s Emergency Relief Coordinator, on behalf of the UN Secretary-General. The CERF delivers urgently needed humanitarian assistance at the country-level by kick-starting relief efforts immediately in a crisis and by scaling up and sustaining protracted relief operations to avoid critical gaps when no other funding is available. CERF funding supports time-critical, life-saving activities and provides humanitarian assistance and protection to those in the most vulnerable situations. This includes women and girls, people with disabilities, the elderly, refugees, and internally-displaced people. Project activities include: (1) supporting life-saving activities (food, nutrition, health, protection, shelter, water, sanitation, hygiene, transportation, communication and other items of assistance); and (2) enabling more timely and coordinated humanitarian action.
