Description:

This project leverages the partnership between the World Health Organization (WHO) Pandemic and Epidemic Information Centre and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). It aims to strengthen capacities in biosafety and integrated disease surveillance to reduce biological threats—whether intentional, natural, or accidental—and builds on Phase I of the Africa Health Security Partnership. The project activities include the following: (1) Establishing a robust biosurveillance system in selected countries; (2) Organizing targeted training in interdisciplinary social research at the subnational level to improve the rapid identification and detection of biological threats; and (3) providing comprehensive training programs on pandemic information and data science for public health professionals in participating countries.

Expected Results:

This Project will result in: (1) Increased political awareness and technical capacity in biosecurity and bio-surveillance amongst multi-sectoral government officials and key stakeholders in target countries, leading to increased political will and enhanced investment and resource allocation for biosafety and biosecurity; (2) Strengthened knowledge and capacity on integrated disease surveillance systems, event-based surveillance, biorisks, genomic surveillance, rapid detection and assessment of outbreaks, and gender awareness integration into biosafety and biosecurity efforts, leading to improved detection and reporting of all biological threats amongst health security professionals in target countries; and ultimately, (3) Reduced risks to Canada and its Allies that terrorists and states of proliferation concern will have the opportunity to acquire deadly pathogens in Africa for development and use as biological weapons.
