Canada’s annual assessed contribution is a legally binding obligation of membership and a non-discretionary expenditure.

Canada's annual assessed contribution to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a legally- binding obligation of membership, furthers the Government of Canada's foreign policy goals related to international maritime affairs and provide it with a voice in the international community on international maritime issues.
The objective of paying the annual assessed contribution is to enable Canada to meet its financial obligations to the IMO as well as fulfilling our foreign policy objectives by participating in the work of the organization to provide the machinery for cooperation among Governments in the field of governmental regulation and practices relating to technical matters of all kinds affecting shipping engaged in international trade; and encourage and facilitate the general adoption of the highest practicable standards in matters concerning maritime safety, efficiency of navigation and prevention and control of marine pollution from ships.
