Description:
This project aims to reduce threats from terrorist financing and money laundering in North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia) through strengthened, human-rights compliant, and gender responsive national and regional financial oversight capacity. Project activities include 1) foundational and advanced “follow the money” training, 2) simulated court preparation sessions, 3) on-the-job mentorship for financial intelligence unit (FIU) analysts and 4) specialized workshops on evolving technologies, beneficial ownership, and the abuse of the non-profit sector in terrorist financing.

Expected Results:
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) Improved response by beneficiary countries to transnational organized crime and terrorism financing in a manner consistent with international norms, practices and conventions; (2) Increased commitment to sharing of information and expertise among beneficiary countries to combat terrorist financing and money laundering ; (3) Effective compliance with United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions regimes on terrorism financing (TF) and proliferation financing (PF) ; (4) Improved response to identified FT/ML risks, including those related to misuse of the non-profit sector, and virtual assets, with gender considerations integrated into national AML/CFT efforts.
