The Project is a national initiative delivered across eight components over six fiscal years as part of a broader effort implemented by the Inter-Council Network (ICN), a coalition of eight provincial and regional councils for international cooperation. As one component of this larger initiative, the Project strengthens public engagement on global issues and supports the contribution of people across Canada to international cooperation efforts. The Project increases understanding of global challenges through coordinated outreach, capacity-building, and youth engagement. It reaches communities that are often underserved by centralized engagement models, including Indigenous communities, diaspora groups, youth, professional associations, and rural and remote populations. These groups, along with women, gender-diverse individuals, and emerging leaders, are the primary beneficiaries of the Project. In Northern Canada, the Northern Council for Global Cooperation works with civil society stakeholders to foster leadership through dialogue, programming, and public engagement that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Project enhances the ability of people and organizations in the region to participate meaningfully in Canada’s international cooperation efforts. The Project activities include: (1) strengthening public awareness and motivation to support international development assistance by delivering International Development Week (IDW) events, implementing media and storytelling initiatives, and producing public-facing campaigns; (2) deepening opportunities for Indigenous Elders, youth, and knowledge holders to engage in global peacebuilding and development dialogues by convening gatherings, co-creating culturally grounded learning resources, and developing multimedia storytelling tools; and (3) enhancing the knowledge and skills of international development actors by delivering equity- and sustainability-focused workshops, developing accessible learning tools, and contributing to national coordination and knowledge-sharing platforms.

Global Affairs Canada

The ultimate outcome of the Project is to enhance the support for Canada’s international development assistance, including gender equality, by people across Northern Canada as global citizens, especially youth and underrepresented communities. The Project achieves this through public engagement, global citizenship strategies, and capacity-building activities. It directly engages 1,600 beneficiaries across Northern Canada over five years, focusing on youth, educators, and historically underrepresented communities through a values-based approach grounded in storytelling, critical reflection, and justice-rooted education. Informed by feminist, Indigenous, and decolonial perspectives, this approach supports people in becoming active co-creators of a world where all can thrive in dignity. The Project also reaches more than 184,000 people through digital storytelling, targeted campaigns, media publications, and research, with engagement and capacity-building activities rooted in equity, interdependence, social justice, decolonization, and Indigenous rights. These interlinked strategies reinforce one another and strengthen the collective impact of Canada’s international assistance efforts.

The expected outcomes of this Project include: (1) increased involvement of people across Canada, including underrepresented populations, as global citizens in international development assistance in support of gender equality and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); (2) increased effectiveness of Canadian partners in delivering inclusive global citizenship initiatives in support of international development assistance for people across Canada, including underrepresented populations and ; (3) strengthened pan-Canadian coordination and knowledge-sharing that enhances the collective contribution of regional and national actors to global citizenship efforts.
