Description:
The project aims to increase stabilization and early recovery conditions of in areas of Mosul District by clearing explosive hazards and build local capacity to address residual contamination in the future. The project provides mentorship and oversight to all operations through locally trained teams. Project activities include: (1) training and mentoring local teams to deliver mine risk education for local communities; (2) conducting non-technical surveys; and (3) conducting clearance operations.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe agricultural and residential land by beneficiaries in liberated areas of Mosul District; (2) increased knowledge of the locations and extent of explosive hazard contamination by stakeholders including Iraqi authorities and the civilian population in Mosul District; (3) increased knowledge of appropriate and safe behaviour by the population of communities living in and around areas contaminated by explosive hazards in Mosul; and (4) increased national capacity to address the impact of explosive hazards, particularly improvised landmines in Mosul District and other liberated areas.

Peace and Stabilization Operations
Program Purpose:

The Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPs) is an integral component of the Government of Canada’s toolbox to prevent and respond to conflicts and crises abroad. It supports rapid, effective, whole-of-government coordinated responses to a wide range of challenges and serves as a valuable instrument for supporting stability in conflict-affected regions. PSOPs provides visible and concrete assistance in response to conflicts and crises abroad through targeted programming, the deployment of Canadian police officers (in partnership with Public Safety Canada and the RCMP) and civilian personnel, and direct support to the UN and multilateral peace operations, conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding efforts.
