This project is part of Global Affairs Canada’s International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. The IYIP is designed to offer Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience in international development.
Bow Valley College, in a consortium with College of the Rockies and Selkirk College, sends 84 interns to nine countries. The internships positions help to support the economic growth, democracy and education of children and youth in those countries by working closely with local organizations. Activities include: conducting research and analysis on gender equity issues, raising awareness of gender inequality issues at the institutional and community levels, working with local governments to support rural development projects using renewable energy, and researching sector best practices in greening early childhood education curriculum.

Expected Results:
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased efforts by Canadian youth interns (women and men) to secure employment through their internship experience, including in the field of international development; and (2) increased engagement of Canadian youth interns (women and men) as global citizens who support international development efforts in Canada and abroad.

Program Purpose:
The International Youth Internship Program is intended to:
provide eligible Canadian youth with international experience, skills and knowledge that will prepare them for future employment;
increase employment opportunities by promoting awareness among Canadian organizations of the advantages of integrating young Canadian professionals into their structures and programs;
provide opportunities for Canadian youth to increase their awareness, deepen their understanding as global citizens, and engage in international development; and
contribute to the advancement of Global Affairs Canada’s mandate to reduce poverty and inequality, promote human rights and increase sustainable development, and to meet Global Affairs Canada’s priorities for official development assistance.
