Grants and Contributions:
The expected program outcome is to enhance capacity of recipients to participate in oceans conservation and management activities, in support of Canada achieving and surpassing its marine conservation targets. Specifically that 10% of Canada’s marine and coastal areas are protected by 2020 as per the Convention on Biological Diversity. Project activities will increase collaboration and knowledge, leading to integrated and informed decisions and actions, including the establishment and management of marine conservation measures, which will ultimately contribute to sustainable use and development of the coastal, estuarine and marine ecosystems.
The following is a list of some of the performance indicators that will assist in measuring and monitoring the progress of the Oceans Management Contributions Program:
• Number of collaborations supported
• Percentage of marine territory protected
The Integrated Oceans Management Branch at DFO has developed a Performance Measurement Strategy and tools to support the performance measurement function of this initiative. The Performance Measurement Strategy will be validated annually and updated as needed. These tools guide project managers in reporting activities and outputs, tracking and assessing progress against outcomes and targets, and provide details on adjustments to work plans, spending and mitigation strategies, as applicable. DFO will continue to coordinate planning, implementation and reporting of this component, through its Integrated Oceans Management Branch.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) will use this authority:
• To improve oceans governance and co-management of marine spaces through consultations and engagement; and,
• To increase marine conservation efforts, supported by science evidence.
