Description:

The project has six main objectives: • Promote gender equality and diversity in trades; • Provide an inclusive workforce with qualified trades people and limit the barriers to employment; • Provide customized training programs to meet the demand of long-term and short-term labour needs in the Bricklayer and Concrete Finisher Red Seal Trades; • Improve Apprentice and Red Seal completion rates; and • Improve labour shortages throughout NL and Canada in the Bricklayer, and Refractory Bricklayer Red Seal Trades.The project submitted by BAC Local 1, NL has six main objectives: • Promote gender equality and diversity in trades; • Provide an inclusive workforce with qualified trades people and limit the barriers to employment; • Provide customized training programs to meet the demand of long-term and short-term labour needs in the Bricklayer and Concrete Finisher Red Seal Trades; • Improve Apprentice and Red Seal completion rates; and • Improve labour shortages throughout NL and Canada in the Bricklayer, and Refractory Bricklayer Red Seal Trades.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of the Innovation in Apprenticeship Stream are:
• an increase in the number of individuals in funded projects that participate in skills training activities
• an increase in the number of individuals reporting an increase in skills after program intervention
• an increase in the number of individuals in funded projects continuing in apprenticeship after program intervention
• an increase in the number of individuals participating in funded projects who report they are employed in a skilled trade
• an increase in the number and type of project partners, for example:
o unions
o Indigenous organizations
o educational institutions
o non-profit organizations
o for-profit organizations
o provincial or territorial governments or both
o municipal governments

Program Purpose:

The Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy (CAS) provides funding to encourage Canadians to explore, prepare for, participate and succeed in apprenticeship and careers in the skilled trades. It also aims to encourage the
development of innovative approaches to improve apprenticeship outcomes, including improving the
participation and success of equity-deserving groups, and enhancing employer engagement of apprentices.
The Innovation in Apprenticeship Stream (fomerly UTIP S2), a stream under CAS, aims to support innovative approaches and strengthen partnerships to address apprenticeship challenges in the Red Seal trades.The stream supports projects that:
• use innovative approaches or expand best practices to address challenges limiting apprenticeship outcomes in Red Seal trades
• involve broad-based partnerships between organizations across sectors, regions or trades
