Description:
The overarching objective of the Union Training and Innovation Program aims to strengthen apprenticeship training systems to better support a skilled, inclusive, certified and productive trades workforce by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of training provided. .The streams have the following specific objectives: .Stream 1 (Equipment) will increase investment in training equipment and materials for higher quality training, leading to a more skilled and productive trade workforce. .Stream 2 (Innovation in Apprenticeship) will support innovation and enhanced partnerships to address long-standing and complex challenges that limit apprenticeship outcomes. .Stream 3 (Women in Construction Fund [WCF]) will support projects that expand or replicate successful models to encourage more women to participate and succeed in apprenticeship and the skilled trades. Stream 4 (Trades Exploration and Experience Program) will support projects that encourage Canadians to explore, prepare for, participate and succeed in apprenticeship and skilled trades careers. This stream is limited to participants who are not registered apprentices.. The Investment in Training Equipment Stream aims to improve the quality of training of apprentices in Red Seal trades. The stream supports projects that demonstrate a need for training equipment or materials that meet industry standards or investments in new technology to train apprentices in the Red Seal trades.

Expected Results:

The expected outcome of the Union Training and Innovation Program is for individuals to progress through their training and experience improved labour market outcomes in the trades. To achieve this, the program will help to support the following outcomes: .• Individuals have the improved skills to succeed in the trades;.• Members of key groups, including Indigenous people and women, explore, prepare for, participate and succeed in apprenticeship and skilled trades careers; .• Individuals progress through apprenticeship training; and,.• Individuals experience improved labour market outcomes in the Red Seal trades. .

The expected outcomes of the Investment in Training Equipment Stream are:
• an increase in the number of individuals participating in funded projects that participate in skills training activities
• an increase in the number of individuals participating in funded projects reporting an increase in skills after program intervention
• an increase in the number of individuals participating in funded projects who report they are employed in a skilled trade
• an increase in the number and type of project partners, such as:
o unions
o employers
o Indigenous organizations
o educational institutions
o non-profit organizations
o for-profit organizations
o provincial or territorial government
o municipal governments

Program Purpose:

The Union Training and Innovation Program supports investments in training equipment and materials for unions as well as in innovative approaches to improve apprenticeship outcomes, including improving the participation and success of key groups such as women and Indigenous people.

Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy provides funding to encourage Canadians to explore, prepare for, participate and succeed in apprenticeship and careers in the skilled trades. It also aims to encourage the
development of innovative approaches to improve apprenticeship outcomes, including improving the
participation and success of equity-deserving groups, and enhancing employer engagement of apprentices.

The General Apprenticeship Supports’ objective is to encourage and support pre-apprentices (i.e. non registered apprentices) and apprentices, particularly equity-deserving groups, to explore, prepare for, participate and succeed in apprenticeship and skilled trades careers. It also aims to enhance partnerships between unions, employers and other organizations; improve the quality of training; and address long-standing challenges that limit apprenticeship outcomes through a variety of activities.
