Grants and Contributions:
The Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy (PCAIS) is a key part of the Government of Canada's approach to supporting talent, research and innovation in artificial intelligence. Announced in Budget 2017, the strategy works to attract, retain and develop academic research talent and build national centres of expertise and training in Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton.
Budget 2021 announced the launch of an enhanced second phase of the strategy, including to establish a transfer payment program to provide non-repayable contributions to Canada's national artificial intelligence institutes to accelerate the translation of artificial intelligence research into commercial or other innovations; grow the capacity of Canadian businesses, not-for-profit organizations, health providers including hospitals, or other public corporations and agencies to develop, adopt, use, or commercialize artificial intelligence; and encourage the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence based in human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation and economic growth.
