Description:
The Hillsborough segment of the Shoreline Trail will be an integral component of the regional signature pedestrian and cycling linear trail. In total, the Shoreline trail will extend approximately 170 kilometers in southeast New Brunswick, from Alma, NB to Cap Pelé, NB. This pedestrian/cycling trail will run through the heart of the Village of Hillsborough and take users along a combination of gravel and paved roadways, alongside and around wetland areas and along a protective dike bordering the Petitcodiac River in southeast New Brunswick.
The Hillsborough segment and Weldon portions of the signature trail will total approximately 12 kilometers and include six individual segments; (1) being 1.9 kilometers in length, along a gravel and paved roadway; (2) 1.3 kilometers of trails around a wetland area; (3) a 700-meter segment along a paved roadway to the village center; (4) a 1.5-kilometer segment around another wetland area; (5) a 3.1-kilometer segment along a raised protective dike bordering the beautiful Petitcodiac River and; (6) a final 3.6 kilometer segment along a dike, extending inland from the Petitcodiac River to Weldon Creek along an old abandoned rail line.
The project will be completed over three years. Year 1 (2022) will include adjacent landowner consultations, architectural design of the trail, and some preliminary preparatory work. Year 2 (2023) will include the some additional work on work on segments 2 and 4, and partial construction of segments 5 and 6. Year 3 (2024) will involve the remaining work on segments 5 and 6. The work will include purchasing and installing appropriate signage, grading and surfacing with tailings on portions of segments 2, 4, 5 and 6 to make walking safe and enjoyable. The work will be completed using a combination of in-kind work with community-owned equipment, work by seasonal employees and contracted work on sections 5 and 6.
