Description:
This project is mainly for the construction of flood diversion channels as a risk mitigation plan to protect large areas of the former Town of Sussex and the former Village of Sussex Corner, in New Brunswick, from flooding. Both communities have been amalgamated into a new municipality of Sussex beginning on January 01, 2023 as a result of Local Governance Reform in the Province of New Brunswick. The first channel extends from Trout Creek to the flood plain of the Kennebecasis River and will cross Route 1 and the second channel connects Parson Brook to Trout Creek. This project also includes the construction of two overpasses on HWY 1 where it crosses the proposed channel. Flooding in Sussex pose significant threats to health and safety in the community; threats to critical infrastructure, including interruptions in essential services; significant disruptions in economic activity; and increasingly high costs for recovery and replacement of impacted assets.

Expected Results:

The project will reduce flood risk in Sussex by improving flood protection infrastructure, helping to protect residents, properties, critical infrastructure, and essential services from flooding while reducing economic losses and supporting the community’s long-term sustainability and growth.
