This project will provide funding to Nova Scotia, over five years, to prepare Impact of Race and Culture Assessments (IRCAs) for qualified legal aid clients in the province of Nova Scotia. IRCAs are pre-sentencing reports that assist courts in considering the effect that racism and other unique circumstances experienced by Black persons and potentially other racialized minorities, have contributed to their contact with the criminal justice system.

Program Purpose:

Criminal legal aid helps support legal services for economically-disadvantaged persons accused of serious criminal offences and for youth charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Immigration and refugee legal aid supports legal services for eligible individuals appearing at immigration and refugee proceedings. The Legal Aid Program also manages and funds State-Funded Counsel cases on behalf of the federal government, where the Attorney General of Canada is ordered by a court to provide funded defence counsel, or where the Department reimburses legal aid plan costs in national security proceedings. Additionally, the Legal Aid Program provides funding for legal information and advice services for complainants of workplace sexual harassment and for the implementation of Impact of Race and Culture Assessments across Canada.
