Description:
Systemic change informed by Gladue Principles to address Indigenous overrepresentation in the criminal justice system; This multi-year project will explore the systems, policies, processes, and practices that influence the sentencing of Indigenous people involved in the Alberta provincial justice system. The goal is to reduce the number of Indigenous people in the corrections system, through reallocating existing resources to new community and restorative justice models for sentencing and bail conditions, that improve corrections outcomes and reduce recidivism. Yellowhead Tribal Community Corrections Society covers provincial courts for 5 Nations in Alberta and will engage and share knowledge with partners working throughout Alberta.
