One-year contribution agreement between Canada and the Halifax Refugee Clinic for the delivery of immigration and refugee legal aid. The Halifax Refugee Clinic's 2022-2023 allocation from the $11.5 million in base funding for immigration and refugee legal aid will be $197,000. Halifax Refugee Clinic will also receive a portion of the $43.5 million in additional funding announced in Budget 2022 for immigration and refugee legal aid.

Program Purpose:

Criminal legal aid helps support legal services for economically-disadvantaged persons accused of serious criminal offences and for youth charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Immigration and refugee legal aid supports legal services for eligible individuals appearing at immigration and refugee proceedings. The Legal Aid Program also manages and funds State-Funded Counsel cases on behalf of the federal government, where the Attorney General of Canada is ordered by a court to provide funded defence counsel, or where the Department reimburses legal aid plan costs in national security proceedings. Additionally, the Legal Aid Program provides funding for legal information and advice services for complainants of workplace sexual harassment and for the implementation of Impact of Race and Culture Assessments across Canada.
