Description:
Five-year cost-shared agreement between Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan for the delivery of criminal legal aid. Saskatchewan's five-year allocation for criminal legal aid will be $39,725,650. Saskatchewan will also receive an additional $3,409,316 in 2023-24 from the $60 million announced in Budget 2022 for criminal legal aid. This additional funding is subject to the approval by the Treasury Board of Canada and the appropriation of funds by the Parliament of Canada.

Legal Aid
Program Purpose:

Criminal legal aid helps support legal services for economically-disadvantaged persons accused of serious criminal offences and for youth charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Immigration and refugee legal aid supports legal services for eligible individuals appearing at immigration and refugee proceedings. The Legal Aid Program also manages and funds State-Funded Counsel cases on behalf of the federal government, where the Attorney General of Canada is ordered by a court to provide funded defence counsel, or where the Department reimburses legal aid plan costs in national security proceedings. Additionally, the Legal Aid Program provides funding for legal information and advice services for complainants of workplace sexual harassment and for the implementation of Impact of Race and Culture Assessments across Canada.
