Program Purpose:

The Indigenous Justice Program supports culturally-relevant community-based justice programs that offer alternatives to mainstream justice processes in appropriate circumstances. Since 1978, the Department through the Indigenous Courtwork Program makes contributions to provincial/territorial governments through bilateral multi-year cost-sharing contribution agreements to support the provision of culturally competent services to Indigenous persons charged with an offence under federal or provincial statute or municipal by-law or otherwise involved in the justice system.
