Description:
The Expanding on Indigenous Courtwork services: Cree language development in Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakinak territory Project will consist of mentoring and training in the basics of the Cree language so Courtworkers and their justice partners can better serve Indigenous clients and their families involved in the court process. The 5 day in-person training will take place at the Grey Buffalo Grandfather Wellness Lodge located at Hillside Beach, MB., which is located approximately one hour north of Winnipeg. Approximately 20 people will participate in the training, including 3 Courtworkers, the management team, and the MKO Justice Programs Manager. After the initial 5 days of in-person mentoring and teachings, MKO will revert to an additional 5 days of online instruction and support.

Program Purpose:

Since 1978, the Department through the ICW Program makes contributions to provincial/territorial governments through bilateral multi-year cost-sharing contribution agreements to support the provision of culturally competent services to Indigenous persons charged with an offence under federal or provincial statute or municipal by-law or otherwise involved in the criminal justice system.
