Description:
Five partners will offer a symposium for heritage professionals from across Atlantic Canada to share ideas and knowledge about oral history. Hosted by the Nova Scotia Archives, the Archives Council of Prince Edward Island, the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archivists, the Council of Atlantic University Libraries, and the University of Prince Edward Island, the event takes place in fall 2019 at the University of Prince Edward Island. Topics will include indigenous oral histories; music, folklore, and oral history traditions in Atlantic Canada; ethics; Acadian oral histories; how to conduct an oral history project; and oral history success stories in Atlantic Canada. The symposium will help build capacity among documentary heritage professionals in Atlantic Canada to conduct oral history and learn about current trends and practices.

Expected Results:
The Council of Archives of New Brunswick anticipates that between 20 to 40 persons will attend the Atlantic Canada Oral History Symposium, with 15 to 30 attending virtually. The short-term results are to offer heritage professionals in Atlantic Canada an opportunity to discuss oral history projects and any related questions they may have, and increase awareness of current trends in oral history. The long-term results are to give participants the knowledge and confidence to carry out an oral history project.
